Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Startup Next if I am a single founder?
While we don’t immediately reject applications just because they are from single founders, we do give a preference on accepting startups with 2 or 3 co-founders. We are looking for teams because accelerators really care about accepting teams. If you’re a great business or technical person, but do not have a partner, we may not accept you into the program. We've partnered with CoFoundersLab to make sure this isn't an issue. Please check out there site at www.cofounderslab.com and get matched with a business partner. After that, you should apply to a Startup Next program in your city. You then would also be able to use Startup Next to test your team and the commitment levels.

Can I participate if I work full time?
Each weekly session lasts three hours AND there is 25 hours of work to be completed outside of the program. We tend to take teams who are working on their startup full time. We do also take in startups and entrepreneurs who aren't working full time on the startup, but have shown an incredible commitment to the program. If you can't attend one of the sessions, we'd encourage you not to apply

Can I participate in Startup Next even if my other co-founders can’t attend?

Yes, but we strongly encourage each co-founder to be present and participate in the process of customer discovery. The insight gained from customers can influence the vision and direction of the company and each co-founder should be involved.

I am worried about my intellectual property. Can I ask other attendees to sign an NDA?

No! All information shared in class is public knowledge. Please do not share any unprotected or sensitive proprietary information.

Should I participate if I am seeking investment?

Yes, we want to help get you better prepared to have great conversations with accelerators or seed investors!

What are the terms of participation for Startup Next?
It is our job to provide you with an incredible networking and learning opportunity. Our intention is that you meet some amazing people that you might actually start a company with, build relationships with coaches, and learn from your peers. The event is intended to be a collaborative forum for sharing, learning, building, and having fun. As such, by registering as a participant, you acknowledge that any ideas shared by you or anyone else over the course of the event are contributions to the overall experience and community. If you as a participant are worried about someone stealing your ideas, please reconsider your participation in the event itself or simply refrain from sharing specifics about your idea.

As a member of your startup community, you agree to be inclusive of any and all people and their ideas. You agree to act professionally, treat everyone with respect, and treat the event facilities with proper care. You agree that you are responsible for any accidents or damages that you cause. You also agree to not hold Startup Weekend, your local volunteer team, or any of the event supporters liable for any loss, damage, injury, or any other unforeseeable incident.

What stage company is best suited for this program?
Startup Next is designed for startups that have multiple founders and are in the early stages of building the idea. We are looking for startups that have not received funding or been accepted into an accelerator. More importantly, we want to work with teams who are coachable, ready to learn and make real progress throughout the 5 weeks.

Who should NOT attend Startup Next?

Startup Next is a unique program and not everyone is in a position to maximize the value and have a great experience. If you meet any of the following criteria, you should NOT attend a local Startup Next program.

  • Companies who are too biased or attached to their own idea or solution to an assumed problem.
  • Teams or individuals who cannot commit at least 25 hours of work a week
  • Teams or individuals who do not have a basic understanding of Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur’s Business Model Canvas.

Will I get feedback on my product?
Yes. We will be giving you feedback on more than your product. You should expect to get tough feedback on your customer development strategy, market analysis, elevator pitch, funding strategy, and more.

Will I need to build an MVP?
Yes, we will either be helping you understand what MVP to build or helping you refine the MVP that you've already developed.
